Installing Windows 95 Tutorial
To install Windows95 from CD, start with the power off to the computer. Insert the boot Disk into the A: drive and apply power. If you don't have a boot disk you may obtain one from Bill LLoyd's web site at . The boot disk has all of the necessaary files to install Win95 from CD. When the computer boots to the A:> prompt, insert the Windows 95 CD.
nbsp; At the A:> prompt type the DOS command FDISK. This command is used to create or delete partitions. When the FDISK menu appears select option #4. This option will let you know if a partition already exist and of what type, if any. If a type NDFS partition exist, it must be deleted before a FAT partition could be created. For this project we only need 1 FAT partition.
nbsp; After the existance of 1 FAT partition has been confirmed, the partition must be formated. At the A:> prompt input the DOS command: Format c:/s. Format is the DOS command used to prepare the hard drive 'C' to accept the Windows 95 operating system. '/' is the signal that a swich is to follow, and the 's' tells DOS to make the disk bootable. (transfer system files).
nbsp; After the 'C' drive has been successfully formated and the system files have been transfered, type c: to access the 'C' drive. Create a directory called cabs by typing MKDIR cabs at the c:> prompt.
nbsp; Change directories to the cabs directory by typing cd cabs. Now copy all of the files with all extensions from the win95 directory from the CD Rom to the cabs directory we just made. (c:> copy r:\win95\*.*) This is done so that we may install Windows95 form the C: drive because it is faster and in the event we might have to reinstall the operating system again at a later date and the CD is either lost of damaged, we could reinstall again from the C: drive (if necessary). The cab extension is short for "cabnite' file. This is Microsft's extension for a compressed file.
nbsp; Once all of the files have been copied from the CD ROM to the c: drive type SETUP. This command wil start the installation wizerd. Follow the on screen prompts to completly install Windows 95.
